Sometimes large amounts minerals like iron in pool water cause the water to change colors and stain the pool walls. They can even discolor hair and nails. The colors vary from brown, red, black and green. The source of the discoloration may be well water, rusting of metal parts or the hardening of the water due to low pH levels. Determine if the culprit is iron so you can eliminate the high iron levels to bring the pool back to its original state. Rinse the jar in the pool water a few times. Place the jar upside down in the water. Push it down 2 feet below the surface of the water. Tilt the jar, filling the jar with water. Screw the lid on the jar under the water.
