How Do You Lower A Childs Sodium Intake?
Part of maintaining good nutrition means ensuring that your child doesn’t consume too much sodium. Our bodies require only a small amount of sodium. If children consume too much, they can develop a taste for salty food that will extend into adulthood and may make them susceptible to high blood pressure and other conditions. Serve a variety of healthy foods and snacks, including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Check the nutrition level on the label when you shop and choose wisely. Gain an awareness of how much sodium is in processed foods, including canned and frozen foods, cereal, bread and processed meat. Encourage your child to choose low-sodium foods when eating out. Most restaurants offer low-salt, heart-healthy choices. Avoid fast-food restaurants as much as possible. Use natural flavoring such as lemon or lime juice, herbs, spices, onions or peppers when cooking. Put the salt shaker away. Don’t put it the table and never salt your child’s food.
