Do this by using a marked ramrod and putting it down the barrel. If the ramrod isn’t marked, you can tell if the gun is loaded by how far down the ramrod goes. If the ramrod enters the barrel and descends to the brass fitting on the tip, it is a good indication that the gun is unloaded. A loaded gun will have a harder feel to the ramrod, as if you are striking something solid on the other end, than an unloaded gun. Insert the ramrod and piece of cloth down the empty gun barrel to swab and clean the inside. Open the breechblock and put in the cap.
