How Do You Live With Fibrous Dysplasia?
Fibrous Dysplasia is caused by a gene mutation that affects the cells that produce bone. The condition begins before birth and causes cells to form an abnormal, fibrous type of bone that grow gradually and expand over the years. This causes a weak area to form in the bone that causes pain, fractures and becomes deformed. Fibrous Dysplasia ranges in severity depending the size of the affected area. Identify the symptoms of Fibrous Dysplasia. Although the affected bone forms before birth, Fibrous Dysplasia is often not identified in an individual until childhood, adolescence or even adulthood. Some symptoms include bone pain, deformity, fractures, scoliosis and a waddling walk. Hormones may develop that specifically target the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary and parathyroid glands. Pigmented skin abnormalities are often seen in patients experiencing hormonal abnormalities. Consult with your physician if you suspect that you or your child is suffering from Fibrous Dysplasia.
