How Do You Live Better Through “New Urbanism”?
New Urbanism is also called the smart growth movement. It is a set of development principles that create more attractive livable communities. The philosophy is the antithesis of the typical suburban sprawl that dominated growth patterns in the United States after World War II. New urbanism has the potential of growing even more popular as gas prices continue to climb, since the design is eco-friendly and fuel efficient. Let’s look at what is involved: There is an aesthetic emphasis on constructing an attractive, comfortable community with a defined sense of place. Communities are built around an activity hub like a plaza, park or square, which should be a natural gathering spot. A community center should be nearby acting as the seat of local government, at the very least home for a neighborhood council. The development center should also serve as a public transit hub. Most residences should be built within a five minute walk of the center which has a mix of commercial shops and offices
