How Do You Light An Acetylene Torch?
Acetylene is a highly-flammable gas that has multiple uses in the construction industry. When matched with oxygen, acetylene burns hot enough to cut through steel and when mixed with air, it is a prime gas for soldering copper piping. There is more to lighting an acetylene torch than placing a spark or flame in front of the flowing gas to start a fire. You must perform a series of safety checks before you light the acetylene torch to ensure the safety of you and others working in the area. Place the bottle key onto the acetylene tank’s square valve control shaft, quickly open and close the valve to clear it. Wrap the threads of the valve with Teflon tape. Attach the gas regulator to the threaded area of the tank valve, press the regulator toward the valve and turn the regulator nut counter-clockwise to thread the gas regulator onto the acetylene tank. Thread the hose connected to the acetylene torch to the outlet port of the gas regulator and tighten the hose to the regulator with the
