How Do You Light A Gas Furnace Or Gas Water Heater Pilot?
If your gas furnace pilot goes out, it is a simple matter to relight it. Older gas furnace have a pilot light, whereas modern furnaces use electronic ignition. If your furnace has a pilot light, it takes only a couple of minutes to relight it. Locate the gas valve which is located at the base of the furnace or wall heater. You will see that it has 3 positions, off, on, and pilot. If you have a long fireplace match, that is wonderful. Probably you don’t have one, so a paper match will have to be adapted to reach in far enough to light the pilot. Find a piece of wire about 6 to 12 inches long. A piece of wire coat hanger will do. Use a piece of tape to attach the end of the match to the wire. Leave as much of the match extended beyond the tape as possible. Turn the valve to the position marked ‘pilot’. Try pressing inward on the valve and you should hear a hissing sound of the gas escaping from the pilot. If the valve does not push in, you may not have turned it to the ‘pilot position. I
