How Do You Level A Concrete Floor?
If your home is built on a slab or you want to renovate your basement or garage, you’ll have to deal with a concrete floor. Many flooring materials can be installed over concrete, including carpet, wood and tile. For best results, you’ll need to level the concrete floor before installing to avoid dips, humps and cracked tiles. Sweep and vacuum the concrete floor. Scrape the floor with a scraper or buff it with heavy grit paper. Vacuum again so that all dust is removed. Get a framing square or a straight, flat piece of lumber. Move it over the whole floor to check for spots that are not level. Mark the high and low spots with chalk or markers. Rent a concrete grinder from a floor specialty shop or rental center. For large bumps, use a high-end grinder or contract the work to a floor removal specialist. Both options cost more, but will take less time to do the job. Open all exterior doors and windows.
