How Do You Learn The National Electric Code?
The National Electric Code (NEC) is the authority on safely installing electrical wiring and associated equipment. Developed and written by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the code was created in 1897 and is updated every three years. The NEC is not only the standard for electricians, it is considered the legal authority for best electrical practices. Because the NEC is nearly 1,000 pages long, you shouldn’t expect to learn all of it, but you can get to work learning the codes you need to know for work or specific projects you would like to complete. Get a copy of the NEC, either in print or online (see Resources 1). Memorizing the code may not be possible, but you should have the NEC handy to answer any questions you may have about specific projects. Attend an NFPA seminar (see Resources 2).
