How Do You Learn Pysanky?
Pysanky eggs are elaborately dyed eggs, meant to be displayed. The dying method is a traditional Ukrainian art of decorating. By slowly building layers of wax over the exterior of the egg, you shrink the area that is being dyed until, eventually, only a small portion of the egg is not covered by wax. By doing so, you are able to create complex designs made up of a series of slices of color. Draw the design lightly on your egg with pencil. Load the kistka with beeswax, and apply wax to any areas you want to remain white. Dip the egg into the base color and leave it there for 15 minutes. Remove the egg with a spoon, and dab it dry with a tissue. Use the kistka to apply wax over the portions of the egg that will remain the base color. There is no need to remove wax already on the egg, as you will be covering more of the egg throughout the process until all that is uncovered is the area being dyed the final color.
