Once you’ve bought the tile and all the tools, the next step is to begin the layout of the tile design and set the tiles into place. Follow the steps to learn how to lay out the tiles in your home improvement project. Choose a design from a photo, a tile design book or your own imagination. Make plans for any odd spaces such as bathtub and shower corners, toilets and sinks. Buy books or software from a home improvement store to aid in layout if you have a difficult time visualizing the grid. Make a jury stick or tile stick from a straight 1 by 2 piece of wood marked with the proper tile spacing. Lay tile in a straight line using proper spacing for your grout lines, making sure to take into account any accent tile.
