Fresh-laid concrete is nice-looking, but it doesn’t stay that way long. It stains easily, cracks and in general isn’t the most attractive type of flooring for a home. Even a drab basement can be livened up by simply applying tile flooring over a concrete slab. Laying tile over concrete is a relatively simple project, and usually doesn’t require more than one person. Start with a clean dry surface and remove any fixtures such as toilets, sinks and appliances such as washing machines and dryers. If the concrete slab is solid and without cracks, tile can be laid directly on the surface as it is. Lay tile without mortar first to get a layout plan, and cut any edging and corner pieces with a wet saw. Cut small pieces or notches and holes to fit around pipes and fixture supports with a hand-held carbide saw.
