Some wall-tiling situations require the use of backer board; other situations do not. If you are using large tiles (12 by 12 inches or larger) you should install backer board. This rule applies to backsplashes, tub and shower surrounds, and in other bathroom applications. Use the best-quality materials that you can afford for your tile installation. Remove anything currently attached to the wall that is not the drywall. Tile must be attached directly to either drywall or backer board. Drywall must be structurally sound and mold and mildew free. If the existing drywall is soft and squishy when you push on it, it has to be replaced. This is especially important in tub and shower surrounds.
