How Do You Lay Tile On Wood Floors?

0

Normally, you want to lay tile floors over cement board underlayment to provide a solid base and prevent movement and cracking. But this raises the level of the floor surface considerably, and isn’t always necessary. Tile can be laid directly over wood, in the right circumstances and with the right preparations. Smaller rooms are better for this method (because there’s less chance of a sagging floor). Use smaller, thicker tiles, and make sure the floor isn’t rotting or loose. Don’t do this in a bathroom, as the moisture can soften the wood. Use your hammer and flatbar to remove all floor trim in the room. Thoroughly clean the floor. Go over the whole surface by hand, looking for any obtructions or loose spots. If any part of it moves, nail it down. If there are any sagging areas of the floor, brace it from underneath if possible, which may require a floor jack in the basement. Go over the whole floor by hand with your power sander, to take off any gloss or grime and rough up the surfac
