How Do You Lay Sod Over Existing Grass?
Sod is a mat of mature grass, grass roots and about 1/2 inch of top soil. Laying sod is a fast and fairly easy way to grow a full, healthy lawn in a much shorter amount of time than sowing seed. However, it is also much more expensive. Sod producers grow grass, then harvest it by cutting it into manageable pieces. They then sell these sod sections to home and garden specialty stores, which in turn sell it to you. Remove the existing grass, including the top 3/4 inch of top soil, using a flat, metal shovel. Rake the area clear of exposed rocks and organic debris using a hard metal rake. Ensure that the soil grade is 3/4 inch below adjacent walkways and driveways to compensate for the depth of the sod. Add 1/4 to 1/2 inch of organic fertilizer over the prepared lawn area using a fertilizer spreader. Fertilizer facilitates faster establishment of the sod grass by enhancing the soil’s productivity.
