How Do You Lay Marble Tiles Over Ceramic Tiles For A Fireplace?
A ceramic tile fireplace can be given an upgrade through the use of marble tiles. While marble tiles will adhere to ceramic when the correct mortar is used, it is important to make sure that the ceramic tiles are in good condition and firmly glued to the surround and hearth of the fireplace. A loose ceramic tile will eventually come off of the fireplace along with the marble tile or tiles on top of it. Clean the fireplace thoroughly and glue down any loose ceramic tiles with tile adhesive. Apply marble sealer to the top of each marble tile, with a rag. Spread latex-reinforced thinset mortar over the ceramic tiles on the surround of the fireplace, with a notched trowel. Press the marble tiles firmly into the mortar and use 1/16-inch spacers between tiles. Continue until you have covered the surround of the fireplace.
