How Do You Lay Ceramic Wall Tile?
Ceramic tile dresses up a wall. It’s perfect for bathrooms and kitchens because of the protection it provides to the wall from moisture and damage, but it can also work well in other rooms. There are two crucial preparation issues with tiling walls. One is to make sure you’re starting with a flat, solid wall that’s free of gloss or obstructions (crumbling plaster will have to be repaired first). The other is to start with vertical and horizontal guidelines that are level and plumb, even if the wall isn’t. Measure the wall end to end to find the middle. Use your level to draw a vertical line from top to bottom at the middle. Make sure the line is plumb (straight). Measure the height of a tile. Measure up from the floor at that height, adding 3/8 inch to it. (So if the tile is 4 inches high, the mark should be 4 3/8 inches off the floor.)
