Laying traditional wall-to-wall carpet over any surface is heavy work and is best left to professionals, but for any tiled or smooth surface, carpet squares can easily be installed by the average do-it-yourself homeowner. These squares, also referred to as carpet tiles, give the same look as wall-to-wall carpeting when properly installed. Remove air return registers from the floor. Clean the floor, sweeping up any debris and then mopping with a wax-removing cleaning solution. Once the floor dries, vacuum it to collect any remaining dust. Find the center of the room. To do this, snap two chalk lines that dissect the room from corner to corner. The center of the room is where the two lines meet. Mark guidelines. Using the center of the room as a guide, snap two more chalk lines that divide the room vertically and horizontally.
