How Do You Lay A Floating Floor?
Floating floors are a modern, easy-to-install answer to traditional hardwood flooring. Unlike hardwood floors, which are nailed down as they’re installed, a floating floor sits on a hard foam underlayment, unattached to anything, held in place only by the floor trim. The boards are generally pressed wood or particle board with a laminated plastic or wood veneer face. They snap together like puzzle pieces. The installation process is simple enough that an average homeowner can do it in an afternoon. Remove the floor trim gently with a prybar, keeping the pieces whole. Remove the nails and set them aside. If there is carpet on the floor, remove it. Remove any other obstructions such as nail heads. Roll your foam underlayment out alongside one wall. Cut it at the end with your razor knife. Roll out the second course next to it, so the sides meet. Tape the rows together with underlayment tape, but don’t tape them to the floor.
