Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a man made gem, that is often used as a diamond simulant, because it resembles a diamond (for the untrained eye),but is much cheeper.With a little training, it’s easy to know if the stone is a real diamond or a cheap cubic zirconia, without using a diamond tester: Look at the stone in a bright light (for example in full sun), and notice the sparkle.A diamond should have only white, or silvery sparkles.Instead, the CZ has more fire, with colorful red, yellow, blue sparkles. With a jeweler’s loupe, examine the stone, and look at places where the facets of the stone meet.In a diamond, they should be sharp, but in a CZ they appear more rounded. Is the stone too big?If the stone is too big (more than 2.5 carats), if it is really a diamond it should cost a small fortune.
