Although some people may appear to be immune to poison ivy, it can affect anyone at any time even if they have never been affected before. It is not just confined to the woods or an uninhabited area. Poison ivy can be found in your own back yard. Using a weed-whacker or lawn mower will just spray the toxins onto your legs. It is important not only to remove the plant from your yard but also to ensure it does not grow back. Wear gardening gloves, long sleeves, long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes or boots. Tuck your pants legs into your socks and your sleeves into your gloves to ensure better coverage. Trim back the leaves and stems of the plant. Dispose of them in a sealed plastic bag in a trash can. Cover the entire plant site using a tarp, newspaper, mulch or cardboard. Weight the covering down, using gardening tools or sandbags. Leave the area covered until the plant is killed.
