How Do You Kill Moles & Shrews With Traps?
In addition to catch-and-release and gassing, there are several options for killing moles and shrews with traps. Shrews are smaller, so one trap option is preferable for them than others. Unfortunately, moles are smart, and figure out how to avoid traps. To prevent that to some extent, mole traps should be used only on active tunnels and only far from the entrances. Activity can be determined by pressing down a stretch of burrow ridge and seeing if it pops back up again in a few days. Install a harpoon mole trap if you are looking for ease of use or have sandy or clay soils. Flatten the burrow ridge (the lifted soil above the tunnel) to force the mole to lift it up again. This will trigger the pan to release the catch. To set the trap, push the two large legs into the ground on opposite sides of the tunnel, far enough that the pan lies flat on the ground.
