Taking proper care of your compost pile is just as important as composting itself. By monitoring the moisture, contents and even insects that inhabit your composting area, you can have total control of your composting area. Identify what insects are in your compost pile. Many insects, such as earthworms, should be left alone because it’s their presence that starts the natural composting process. Keep an even balance of green (plant materials and food scraps) and brown materials (pine needles, dried leaves and newspaper strips) in your compost pile. If you have more of one than the other, the pile could become too dry or too moist. Avoid putting any animal products or greasy items into the compost pile.
