Nylon rope is a handy, multipurpose material that deserves a place in every shed and toolbox. It is cheap, strong and very easy to work with. But it does have one drawback: It is usually sold in huge lengths, and most applications will require only a fraction of the total length. And when you cut it, the rope can quickly and easily unravel. The good news is that the nylon material melts well under a direct flame, so you can follow these steps to seal and save your rope. Unroll as much rope as you need for your application. Use a utility knife or some heavy-duty scissors to cut off the length that you want. Flick a lighter and hold the flame under the cut end of the rope. If you do not have a lighter, you can hold the rope over a campfire, a gas stove range or just about any other source of open flame.
