When you’re experiencing cold or even freezing temperatures, and you’ve got citrus trees on your property, there’s always cause for drastic measures to save your precious fruit. I’ve found a sound piece of advice from a local Floridian which has been time tested on how to keep your fruit from freezing, and it’s really quite simple to accomplish. Fill half of an empty coffee can or tin (the three pound cans work best for decent sized trees) with charcoal. Any kind of charcoal will do. Now you have a “smudge pot”. These are perfect for warming things up. Set cans under each tree (two or three cans per tree for a decent sized tree). What that means is; if you have saplings, you wouldn’t need two or three cans per tree, but to give you an example; our trees are approximately 15-20 ft. and I use three under each one.
