People hang hummingbird feeders to draw the small, brightly-plumed creatures to their yards and patios. A good way to encourage hummingbirds is by putting sugar water in their feeder. This has the drawback of attracting pests like bees, wasps and ants. But there are a few simple steps you can take to keep insects away from your hummingbird food. Monitor the feeder for cracks, through which the food may be leaking out and attracting pests. Fill any leaks by brushing on a waterproof wood sealant. Check that the bottom of the feeder is screwed on tightly. Wasps and bees will be attracted to the feeder only if they can detect what’s inside. Hang your feeder in the shade and clean it daily.
