To prevent paint from drying out or caking, and to prevent messy leaks, half used tins of paint can be properly stored. Follow these steps to keep paint fresh and ready-to-use. Open the new can of paint carefully with a specially designed “key” to preserve the lid and the “chime,” the groove around the top edge of the paint can. Fit the rim of the can with a pouring lid to keep the chime clean. Pour paint from the can into smaller containers for easier handling. Tip the can back and forth carefully to prevent paint from flowing back into the chime. Wipe any paint residue from the lid and the chime before sealing the tin. Drape a piece of plastic wrap loosely over the opening of the can. Allow it to float on top of the paint. Place the lid on the can and cover with a piece of 2 by 4. Hammer the lid into place with a rubber mallet rather than a metal h
