The SAR was founded in 1876 and is open to any man, 18 or older and in good standing in the community, who can prove lineal descent from a Revolutionary War patriot. Read the following steps to determine whether your eligible to join the SAR. Determine eligibility by tracing the family line to a Revolutionary War patriot. The patriot did not have to serve in the military; patriotic or civil service to the American cause is sufficient. Visit the SAR website and contact the state “New Member Helper” who will give assistance in documenting your ancestor. He will also find a local SAR member to provide information on programs and meetings. Two SAR members must also give a recommendation for membership.
