The Black Women’s Health Imperative is the new name for The Black Women’s Health Project. Founded by Byllye Avery, M.Ed., the mission of the organization is to educate black women and health-care providers to insure that the gap in the health care given to black women closes and eventually disappears. Step 1 Get involved on the local level in your community. Although the Black Women’s Health Imperative/Project is a national organization, there are local chapters where you can volunteer. See our Resources section below for how to contact the national chapter. Step 2 Help make a healthy lifestyle a part of life for black women and their families. The organization has a division that is responsible for education. You don’t have to be a professional educator in order to help women and their families learn about health issues that are problems for African-Americans. Step 3 Get involved.
