How Do You Join Copper Pipe & Galvanized Sheet Metal?
Galvanized sheet metal drain pans are widely used for drain pans under appliances like water heaters that are installed above a ceiling. The drain pan will have a copper pipe running from the bottom to a remote site drain. The copper pipe needs to be attached to the sheet metal drain pan in a way that it will make a water-tight seal to prevent leaks. This is typically done with a pipe flange, gasket and piping. Drill a hole in the galvanized sheet metal that is the same diameter of the copper piping that you will be connecting to it. Place the flange gasket between the copper pipe flange and the galvanized sheet metal. Bolt the copper pipe flange to the sheet metal with the appropriate size bolts. The bolts should be just long enough to attach a nut on the other side of the galvanized sheet metal. Sand the end of the first length of copper pipe and brush the inside of the copper pipe flange with a fitting brush. Apply flux to the outside of the copper pipe and to the inside of the copp
