Although wood flooring, particularly patterned or parquet floors, looks like it would be difficult to install, it is a relatively easy do-it-yourself project. As with most construction projects, the key to creating a beautiful and durable floor is in the planning. Choosing the correct flooring material will determine how much labor is involved in the installation, as well as the amount of maintenance the floor will require in the future. For certain types of wood, you will have to rent special equipment like a compressed-air power nailer. Other floors, like parquet, require only basic carpenter’s tools. Prepare the room by making sure the subfloor is in good shape. If the subfloor squeaks once you have removed the existing flooring, use flooring nails to reattach it to the joists in the area of the squeak.
