Microsoft provides regular updates for the Windows XP operating system. Updates provide adjustments to the operating system code for security and for application enhancement. Updates may improve certain applications, such as upgrading Internet Explorer from one version to a newer version. Updates may also patch security vulnerabilities in the operating system to thwart malware attacks. The user may either download and install these updates manually, or may configure the operating system to download and/or install the updates automatically using the Automatic Update function.
