How Do You Install Tub Surround Over Tile?
The easiest way to install a tub surround is on a flat wall, but sometimes that is not possible. If tile is the existing tub surround, the suggested, and messiest, way to install the new surround is to remove the tile, repair the wall and then install the surround. However, it is possible to install a new surround over the existing tile. Remove the faucet handles, shower head, shower extension and all “dress up” rings. Be careful not to break the shower pipe inside the wall. Use hammer and pry bar to remove any soap dishes and corner objects that are permanently attached to tile. Use sander and 80 grit sandpaper to remove the finish from all the tile; tile should not be glossy when done. This will take a lot of sandpaper. The best sander to use is a palm sander. Remove all dust from tub and surrounding area. Dry fit the pieces of the surround to ensure the surround is larger than the tiled area.
