How Do You Install Tile Over Vinyl?
Laying a tile floor over vinyl sheet flooring or vinyl tiles is a tricky installation that is not ever a first choice application. This type of installation is not an industry standard practice because the mastic used to hold tile to the sub floor does not grip well to the slick surface of vinyl and it builds a finish floor layer (the tile) on top of what may be an unstable or deteriorating base (the vinyl). To ensure the best possible outcome, if this type of application is pursued the vinyl must be strongly attached to the sub floor; if it is loose the tile and grout will have a tendency to crack and lift. Rough up the surface of the vinyl with razor cuts and/or sanding in order to create a texture for the tile mastic to grip on to. If you are not certain about the age or material content of your vinyl, it may have been made with asbestos and must not be disturbed by sanding or cutting. Mix in a liquid latex additive to the thinset mortar according to the manufacturer’s specification
