Apply a coating of pipe thread compound (also called pipe dope) to the threads on the end of the pipe. Thread one end of of the shutoff valve onto the threaded end of the pipe in a clockwise direction. Hand-tighten the valve, and then use the pipe wrench to further tighten the connection.
