A sound card allows a computer to turn data into audio signals and play them over speakers. Similar to other hardware devices like video cards and network cards, sound cards require software called drivers to be installed on a hard drive before the operating system will use the device properly. Some computer systems may be set up to install drivers and update automatically, but it is also possible to manually download and install sound drivers.
