Unless you are installing files that have been packaged as Sims2pack files, you will not see the blue installer box. Files you download for the Sims2 come as either two types- Sims2pack files (the ones that are blue, that self-install) or package files. It sounds like you have been downloading package files. You do not have to double-click on package files for them to appear in your game. They should show up when you restart your game, as long as they are unzipped, and as long as you have custom content enabled. If you are downloading clothing or hair or new objects, sometimes you need 2 files- the mesh and the recolour. If this was the case it should have been clearly stipulated on the site where you got your downloads from. These will both still be in package file format. Finally, no of course Windows does not recognise the files, because the only program designed to recognise the files is your Sims 2 game. It does not matter that Windows doesn’t recognise them.
