The Mazda Speed Protege is tuned for performance. While the engine modifications to the vehicle that separate it from a stock Protege are more numerous, the safety advancements are also noteworthy and equally vital. Among the safety upgrades are the all-wheel disc brakes. The rear brakes are crucial in maintaining driver control when braking. Having control will allow the driver to steer during braking which can be the difference between a close call and an expensive and dangerous collision. Replace the rear brakes at the first sign of damage or significant wear. Park the Mazda on a flat surface. Turn off the engine and put the transmission in park (for automatic transmissions). Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with a tire iron from the Mazda’s wheel maintenance kit. Place the jack under the frame in the back of the Protege and lift the rear tires off the ground. Place jack stands under the rear axles and lower the vehicle onto the stands. Unscrew the lug nuts by hand and remove
