An existing cold concrete floor can be modified into a warm floor throughout your home. Add an electric heating mat connected to your home’s electrical system to change your existing concrete floor into a warm, radiant floor heating system. The heating mat can be tiled over, requiring about 1/2 inch of material added to the existing concrete to give your floor a finished appearance. Level the existing concrete floor. Use a 2-by-4 piece of lumber that is very straight to move around the concrete floor. Look for any gaps that appear between the bottom of the lumber and the concrete. Mark a “L” everywhere the floor is low with a permanent marker. Pour leveling compound onto the concrete floor in all the low areas. The mixture will cause the surrounding level of flooring to raise up to and level the concrete. Follow the instructions on the packaging of the leveling compound for the application.
