In order for the GPS unit to function as expected, the antenna must be mounted properly. Determine the mounting position of the receiver unit. The receiver should be a minimum of 1 meter (3 feet) away from any obstruction that may interfere with maintaining LOS to the satellites. Radio whips, radar arrays and any metal assemblies on the roof of the vessel must be accommodated. The receiver cable should be routed to pass through a vertical surface on the pilothouse if it is not being used on an “open” boat.
