The rear suspension of most trucks has been comprised of generally the same technology for over 50 years. The leaf spring provides a decent ride, but can hold a very heavy load without having major problems. Installing a set of leaf springs is more about heavy lifting than difficult work, so don’t attempt this job unless you can easily handle at least 50 pounds of weight. In this case, the project vehicle is a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 truck with no rear suspension. Jack up the rear of the vehicle and place the frame on jack stands. Make sure it’s up very high because you need lots of space to work. Be sure the vehicle is secure before you crawl underneath. Mount the front of the leaf spring to the front hangar on the frame using the 1/2-inch ratchet and sockets.
