How Do You Install Laminate Floor Over Vinyl Floor?
Laminate floors today are designed to “float” over a layer of hard foam underlayment, held there by the floor trim but not glued or nailed anywhere. Laminate is the easiest kind of flooring to install (it can be laid in just a few hours) and can go over almost any flooring surface, including vinyl. The vinyl floor underneath should be clean, dry, and free of any obstructions or loose pieces that could work their way into the foam underlayment. Carefully remove the floor trim with your hammer and prybar, taking care not to break it so that you can re-use it at the end. Remove the nails, and set the trim aside. Thoroughly sweep and clean the vinyl floor. If the old flooring is vinyl tile and any tiles are loose, take them up. Roll out your foam underlayment on the floor along one wall, cutting it to size at the end with your razor knife.
