The Java JDK, which comes with the Java JRE software, is the software development kit that allows you to develop Java applications both for web pages and as stand-alone applications. To install Java 6 in Ubuntu, you can either use the Synaptic Package Manager or the yum command line tool. Open the “Synaptic Package Manager” from the “Administration” sub-menu of the “System” menu. Enter your password when prompted. Type “java6” in the “Quick Search” box. Click on “Mark for Installation” next to “sun-java6-jdk.” Click on “Apply” in the main toolbar.
