How Do You Install & Identify Roll Roofing?
A quick inspection of the roof can reveal clues to what type of roofing membrane was used in the installation. Inspect the edges of the material. Modified bitumen is thick. Obvious signs of heat melt will be evident on the seams of modified bitumen. Measure the width of the material between the seams that run parallel to the eave. Modified bitumen normally carries a width of 39 inches. Rolled roofing less than 36 inches. Tug at the material on the edge. If the material tears easily it is probably roll roofing membrane. Modified bitumen is a tougher grade of material. Remove all of the existing roof material and flashing. Sweep all dirt and debris from the roof with the push broom. Inspect the roof surface for damage. Repair any damaged areas before installing the rolled rubber membrane sheets. Lay the insulation boards on the roof.
