How Do You Install Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter Outlets?
Ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlets provide a level of safety to any electrical outlet located near water. Use a GFCI outlet outdoors, in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and near appliances that use water. In a GFCI outlet, a sensing device measures the electrical current leaving the outlet and the current returning to the outlet. Under normal conditions, these two currents should be the same. A difference in these currents indicates a potentially lethal shock hazard, so the GFCI outlet automatically interrupts the circuit, removing the hazard. Turn off power to the circuit at the breaker box. Verify that the circuit is off by using a circuit test light at the outlet on which you’re working. Remove the existing outlet. Remove the outlet cover plate. Remove the screw holding the existing outlet in the box, and pull out the outlet. Remove the wiring from the old outlet. You should see at least one black wire and one white wire. Usually, there is another wire, which is either
