How Do You Install Free Maps On Garmin Devices?
Not all Garmin GPS units come with preloaded maps. Less expensive, basic handhelds will not include base map data. Maps take large amounts of data, requiring equally large built-in memory. Garmin sells several software programs for different mapping needs. Most map data is proprietary, requiring you to use maps only for the brand of your particular device. However, much of this software includes data for areas you may not need. Free customized maps are easy to create and install on your Garmin device. Coordinate data can be exported from sites, such as Geocaching.com. Download and install Garmin’s free software, Base Camp. The software includes low resolution, basic map information using TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) map data. The U.S. Census Bureau developed these maps for use in census data collection. Alternatively, you may use the more sophisticated Map Source software, available for purchase with your unit.
