Joist hangers are metal brackets beneath the floor of a house that hold the floor joists in place. While the joists alone provide a foundation for the weight of the structure above it, a floor joist adds additional strength and support to the joists. Additionally, because joists are typically made of wood, over time they can crack and split with changing climate conditions. Floor joist hangers offer additional support if the joist becomes damaged. Installing a floor joist hanger is not a difficult job, however, it a very important part of the construction process. Select the proper joist hangers for the floor joists you are using. For example, a 2×12 floor joist requires a 2×12 joist hanger. Nail the joists to the rim board. Place the top edge of the joist flush with the top of the rim board and install 3-inch 16d nails into the joists at a 45 degree angle.
