How Do You Install Exterior Wooden Steps?
Whether you need steps for a porch or deck, with some simple geometry and an accurate layout, you can build structurally sound and visually appealing steps in a few hours. Although wooden step assemblies can begin at the ground level, you should also create a concrete, flagstone or similar flat permanent landing surface on which to rest the step structure. Consult your local building department before building your exterior steps to determine the local and national code requirements relating to stairs. Use the tape measure to determine the vertical distance between the surface of the base level where steps start and the surface of the second level that steps will lead to. This measurement is used to determine the number of steps needed. Divide the above measurement by a number that gives you an equal step height, or “riser,” that is between 7 inches and 8 inches for each step. Multiply the number risers determined in Step 2 by the step tread width to determine the “run” of the stairway
