How Do You Install Chair Rail Moulding?
Chair rail moulding protects walls from being scuffed by the backs of chairs, but its purpose is as much aesthetic as functional. The rail serves as a break in the wall, allowing use of different colors and textures on top and bottom. The rail can be painted or stained to accent other colors in the room. The main trick to installing the rail is getting the angles right. Prepare your chair rail moulding in advance, with paint, stain or gloss. Determine the line for your chair rail. If you have wainscoting, its top will mark your line. Otherwise, use your level and pencil to draw a line at the desired height. Between three and four feet from the floor is typical. Measure the wall for the length of the first piece of railing. Mark the measurement on the back of the piece. Stand the piece on your miter saw in the same position it will go on the wall. If the piece is going to end on an outside corner, then cut the width of the board at a 45-degree angle on your marked line. The angle should
