Using cement particle board under ceramic tiling is not only easier but offers more protection for your home than standard particle board. Most name brands are UL listed as a highly fire-resistant material and offer an environmentally-friendly alternative to other types of backer boards. Cement particle board is lightweight and is more resistant to mold, insect infestation and impact abuse than standard particle board. Begin near the center of the area to be tiled and lay out panels in a staggered pattern, allowing for a 1/8 inch space between panels, working outward to the walls. At the wall, measure and mark cutlines on the cement particle board. Using the straightedge and carbide knife, score the panel and gently snap to size.
